We've done thousands of moves, and along the way we've learned what makes a move go smoothly. We gathered the most important preparation tips here: when your belongings are packed and organised sensibly in advance, the move goes quickly, cost-efficiently and safely. These tips help both you and our movers.

Start with the moving boxes
Pack your belongings into boxes that are as uniform in size and stackable as possible — that way they fit tightly and securely into the van. You can conveniently rent moving boxes from Flyto.
Fill the boxes so that items don't shift: use packing paper as filler, which you can get affordably from Flyto, delivered together with the boxes. A tightly packed box also holds up well when moved on a hand truck and stays intact.

Pack loose items into boxes
The fewer loose items there are, the more efficiently and safely everything can be carried and packed into the van. So pack larger loose items into boxes too — they can come well over the rim of the box.
For example, house plants, table lamps, decorative items and pots are best placed in boxes or sturdy bags. That way they travel safely and there's no small stuff left to carry by hand.

Protect and dismantle in advance
You can protect delicate items such as paintings and light fixtures ahead of time — bubble wrap is available from Flyto in 15-metre rolls. Take down ceiling lamps and paintings from the walls in advance.
If furniture needs to be dismantled, you can do it beforehand. Remember to collect the screws and fittings into their own bags, so reassembly in your new home is easy. If you prefer, you can also leave the dismantling and reassembly to Flyto's movers — we handle it smoothly.

Gather everything ready and visible
We always start loading the van with the boxes, so gather your packed boxes ready and visible — that way we can start loading right away and save time.
Don't forget storage and cellar units: collect small loose items into sacks, bags or boxes. When there's as little loose stuff as possible, carrying and moving goes efficiently.

Take care of your pets
If you have pets, arrange care for them during the move or keep them in one room. That way they can't escape through open doors or get underfoot during carrying.

Consider the distance to the van
It's best to get the moving van as close to the door as possible. In the city centre we recommend reserving street space, so the van can be brought right up to the building's entrance.
If the carrying distance is long — for example a terraced house or a location the van can't get close to — we recommend ordering three movers or helping carry smaller items yourself. A long carrying distance can increase the cost of the move by as much as 20–30 %.
